Childhood cat given away during a toxic relationship gets miraculously returned 8 years later as a stray, recognizing her family the moment they call her name

Mittens is a survivor, and part of us believes she fought so hard to stay alive so that she could spend her remaining years with the family that loved her from the beginning.

It's never an easy choice to rehome a pet. We'd like to believe that everyone always does it for the "right" reasons, but the reality is that most times, they don't. Rehoming a pet, in our opinion, should only be an option after all the other solutions have failed and the quality of the pet's life is suffering. After you've gone to the vet to rule out any medical issues, and certainly after you've tried making adjustments to the household to make them more comfortable. But that wasn't what happened to Mittens, the wholesome kitty from Reddit's r/cats community, who is the star of our story below.

Mittens was a family cat, but was unfurtunately rehomed due to the mother's toxic partner not wanting to live with a cat. The mom and her daughter never thought they would see Mittens again, but then again, cats never fail to surprise us with how resilient they can be. 8 years later, Mittens was returned by a couple who had been feeding her as a stray. They were worried about her, so they brought her into the vet, scanned her microchip, and found that the mom was still the contact listed there. The vet called the mother, who called her daughter, and both went immediately to pick her up. 

But here's the real kicker: people had been calling her "Bella", but as soon as the mother and daughter arrived, they called her "Mittens", and she immediately recognized her old family. Just that alone is enough to make us tear up.

Mittens is now 14 years old, and a survivor. They don't know how long she was a stray, but they do know that they're going to spend the last years of her life spoiling her rotten. Every day, she's working on getting healthier and adjusting back to the indoor life. 

The world may be full of bad news nowadays, but Mittens is a reminder that good things do happen, and they should be celebrated as much as pawssible to fend off the darkness.

    i've been told i should post this here because it's quite a rare story! this is mittens. we got her when i was about 10 years old (i'm now 23), she was my best friend. we had to give her away about 8 years ago and it was absolutely heartbreaking, i didnt get a choice, my mum didn't want to give. her away either but she was blinded in a toxic relationship, he didn't want her. i never thought id see her again.

    then a few weeks ago, a day before my mums birthday, my mum got a call from the vets. a couple had brought her in because they were worried for her, they had been feeding her for at least 3 months. she was a stray, and still had my mums details on her microchip. we don't know how long she was a stray.

  • No cat should ever be as skinny as Mittens was in that picture. We're not saying all cats should be chonky, but at the very least, you know a fat cat is being loved (even if they're being loved too much). Somebody get Mittens a Cheezburger, stat! We can't wait for her to sleep on the couch and lounge in the warm summer sun, finally being able to sleep without a care or worry for the rest of her life.

    my mum called me instantly, and brought her to her home. thank god i was already coming to visit for her birthday. i decided as soon as i heard she was back that she was coming home with me (i live a 6 hour drive from my mum) it wasn't even a question. my partner, a cat lover, was fully on board. already contacted the vet to get consent from the people who found her to get their contact info (to get more information, and send them a huge gift of course!)

    we've found out she's 14 years old, what a survivor. underweight, dental infection, covered in flea dust and dirt, lump on her left side, she's been through a lot. people were calling her 'bella,' as soon as my mum called her mittens she responded and recognised us both instantly.

    i focused on getting her healthier for her journey home, she handled the 3 hour train and 3 hour car ride like a champ, and she's settled in amazingly. we blend her food to help. with her dental pain, we help her clean herself as she struggles to with her mouth. she refuses to hurt me, even when she's uncomfortable (she'd take

    she's had her bl d taken and she's a true fighter, no issues with her organs. she has a hernia that we will be monitoring closely, and she has a dental appointment next week. she's not expressing too much pain, but i want to do everything to make her feel more comfortable.

    even if we don't have much time with her, we're not giving up, and we're going to spoil her rotten. she's such a fighter, my best friend, and i still can't believe i got her back. 8 years later and she's fighting through. there's been many tears, there'll be many more, but i'm so happy to have her home again.
